Lighting a room with different types of light produces different moods. Harsh, ultramodern spotlights are ideal for rooms that require a touch of drama such as the dining room, whilst rooms such as the bedroom will benefit more from understated lighting such as table lamps and sconces.
Look at the general period of history that your décor is based on and use that to determine the type of lighting that suits your home. For a modern look sharp lines and LED lighting are the way to go. If you want the illusion of 1940s Hollywood glamour, for example, don’t be afraid to try a chandelier. Look for lights with bronze- or iron-effect fixtures if you want to go back in time even further. Lantern-style side lamps, for example, are ideal if you want a bit of English Victoriana in your home.
